Dear Families,

It was so nice to see so many of you at last night's Cinco De Mayo concert celebration. I am always amazed when there is standing room only. The children are so supported and loved in our Woolwich community. Thank you!

This week has been a mix of egg layers, farm life and frogs. Always a busy time of year. So many hands-on experiences and excitement of 1st grade looms close!

MONDAY- FIELD TRIP TO WOLFE'S NECK FARM. DRESS FOR ANY WEATHER! If you signed up to chaperone please sign the enclosed waiver and bring in on Monday~Thank you!

May 19 & 20 NO SCHOOL FOR KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS ONLY (KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS ARE INVOLVED WITH KINDERGARTEN SCREENING)

Books Read: Dino Sailors, Dino  Train,  The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash,  Aunt Pitty Patty's Piggy, Big Chickens, Big Chickens Fly the Coop

During writing time they are; writing to Pittston pen pals, visualizing places and people to write about, adding words (letters) to their pictures, rehearsing what they want to say about what they wrote, taking turns sharing their ideas and writing with partners, adding spaces between words and punctuation at the end of a sentence, going back into their writing pieces and revising what they have written by changing or adding to what they wrote and continuing to build up their confidence as writers.

Animated Alphabet is our approach to phonemic awareness and spelling. The letters are taught through a multi sensory approach of music, dance, characters and signs which help the students hold onto that information. We have been writing words and sentences using our characters.

In math we are getting familiar with our 1-110 number grid and playing fun “I Spy” games trying to find out the number, playing with standard and nonstandard measurement, working with two digit numbers, formation of numbers, addition and subtraction practice, counting and number recognition, solving number stories, and continuing our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

We are learning about the Woolwich Way! The Woolwich Way is made up of 6 qualities that will help us to be the best we can be! (Courtesy- I can use good manners, Compassion-I can help others, Respect- I can treat others kindly, Honesty-I can tell the truth, Responsibility- I can take care of myself and my stuff, Quality- I can do my best even when things are hard)

April 1, 2016

Part of our "rainforest" is coming to life! More pictures on the blog~
Hello Families,
I REALLY wish April Fools Day could be dedicated to weekends~

Much of our time this week has been dedicated to assessment for report cards and conferences. If you have not signed up for a conference, please do!

Books Read: The Runaway Bunny. The Happy Day, Counting is for the Birds, Hang on Hopper!, Big Sarah's Little Boots

We continued to be involved with the Chickadee Book Award Program which allows many different teachers in our school (including Mr. Libby) to read a variety of wonderful literature and for the children to respond in writing to the books. They had a chance to vote on their favorite of them all. (There are 10 in all).  I wonder who will win?

During writing time they are; putting the finishing on touches on our “published pieces” for our share day with our book buddies on Friday, visualizing places and people to write about, adding words (letters) to their pictures, rehearsing what they want to say about what they wrote, taking turns sharing their ideas and writing with partners, adding spaces between words and punctuation at the end of a sentence, going back into their writing pieces and revising what they have written by changing or adding to what they wrote and continuing to build up their confidence as writers. We also continue to correspond with our pen pals in Pittston.

Animated Alphabet is our approach to phonemic awareness and spelling. The letters are taught through a multi sensory approach of music, dance, characters and signs which help the students hold onto that information. The characters we have learned about this week were; The Whistling White Whale, Zachary and Zena, and June and her pet Mule.

In math we are working with two digit numbers, formation of numbers, addition and subtraction practice, counting and number recognition, solving number stories, calculator use and continuing our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations (adding “Lion and Lamb” to our weather observations), tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week. Also assessment for report cards.

We are learning about the Woolwich Way! The Woolwich Way is made up of 6 qualities that will help us to be the best we can be! March 18, 2018

Dear Families,

We have been learning so much about our 5 senses and how they keep us safe.

We have also been involved with the Chickadee Award Program which allows many different teachers in our school (including Mr. Libby) to read a variety of wonderful literature, for the children to respond in writing to the books and then, when all are read, they will have a chance to vote on their favorite of them all. I wonder who will win?

During writing time, we continue to write many, many how-to books. The expectation is the student tell a sequence of how to do something (make a sandwich, take care of a pet, plant a seed, build a snowman, be a good friend) and then write the steps in book form. We are still needing to stretch out words, make sure each word has a vowel in it, use classroom print and do quality work while we explore this genre. We are also writing many letters back and forth with out Pittsfield pen pals who we will meet in May/June.

Animated Alphabet is our approach to phonemic awareness and spelling. The letters are taught through a multi sensory approach of music, dance, characters and signs which help the students hold onto that information. The characters we learned this week were; Quentin Quail and Joy and her Noisy Toy.

In math we are working with two digit numbers, formation of numbers, addition and subtraction practice, counting and number recognition, solving number stories, and continuing our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations (adding “Lion and Lamb” to our weather observations), tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

We are learning about the Woolwich Way! The Woolwich Way is made up of 6 qualities that will help us to be the best we can be!
