March 4, 2022

Hello All!

It has been such a fun and topsy-turvy week here! Between the weather and all of the festivities, we have been busy and engaged in some great learning!

A couple of housekeeping things...

If any of you had a gift of lavender hand sanitizer spray sent to our classroom...THANK YOU!!!

Please make sure your child has an extra set of dry clothes to keep here. The snow/melting/freezing/wetness makes it very likely we will get our clothes wet and no one enjoys sitting in wet clothes. Also, a pair of extra shoes so we aren't stomping around in uncomfortable footwear. Spring is a tricky season!!!

Speaking of "tricky" the RSU has said that as of Wednesday March 9th that we are able to remove our masks and go without. Having said that, I realize there may be some of you that want your child to continue to mask while at school. It will be helpful if you send me an email telling me that as a way to try and keep track of who is doing what. Thank you~~

Another change here in the RSU is that our kindergarten screening for next year's class will take place as it has pre-covid. That impacts our current class schedule. A big heads up that KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS ONLY will not have school in May 19 & May 20. It is exciting to be getting back to (dare I say normal) but it is also an inconvenience for all of you...

Upcoming Events:

March 18- No School- Professional Development Day

March 24- Parent/Teacher Conferences~Both 24th and 25th are 1/2 days of school!

April 18-22 April Vacation

February 18, 2022

Hello!

Well, this has been an incredibly busy week! I am ever so thankful to be back in the classroom and feeling like a "normal/healthy" individual! I hope you are all feeling well and are able to enjoy this coming week doing those things you love the most~
I will have my grandchildren for a few days. They are 5, 7, and 14. Busy, busy, busy...

So, this week started with a special assembly/musical in the cafeteria. The 6th graders entertained us and we were so excited to get back toward what feels like school used to.

Monday was also Valentine's Day and we showered each other with friendship and love.

Thursday was our 100th day of school and we celebrated all day with dozens of activities surrounding the number 100. We even had a 100 snack using a pretzel rod and mini bagels. We tried to stack 100 red solo cups and completed 100 exercises. We enjoyed books about children celebrating their 100th day of school and practiced number writing to 100. We also wrote about what food item we could eat 100 of. There was quite a selection of foods chosen-along with some pretty hefty appetites!

We worked with Mrs. Plummer's class to get all 100+ cans/food items up to the office to be sent off to the food bank. Thank you for all of your donations. It was much appreciated!

I hope you all have a wonderful week! March is just around that corner!

We have been learning so much about the continent of Australia and kangaroos with our Go2Science mission! This coming week will be the final week to test our hypothesis.  If you are on Facebook you can check out the Go2Science page to keep up to date with what we have been working on.

During writing time they are spending their time editing previous work. They are learning to add details and label pictures to make their writing more interesting to the reader.

In math we are working with teen numbers, formation of numbers, making pictures to match the number written, addition and subtraction practice, counting by 5s and 10s, working with probability through dice games, reading and creating graphs.  Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

We are learning about the Woolwich Way! The Woolwich Way is made up of 6 qualities that will help us to be the best we can be! (Courtesy- I can use good manners, Compassion-I can help others, Respect- I can treat others kindly, Honesty-I can tell the truth, Responsibility- I can take care of myself and my stuff, Quality- I can do my best even when things are hard)

Upcoming Events:
Kindergarten is going to attempt to collect 100 non-perishable food items before February vacation. We haven't been able to do this the past few years because of-well you know- so we are incredibly excited to be able to do this community service project again. If you are able, please consider donating food for this drive. Thank you~

Valentine's Day Party on MONDAY February 14~ Please send in Valentines for exchange~

If your Gingerbread project hasn't come in, please send it so it can be on display!

Dear Families,

I want to start this by apologizing for not getting a newsletter out lately. I lost one of my best friends and my mom is also dealing with some health issues and I am her caretaker, so my life has been a little scattered. BUT we are keeping it real here at school and have some wonderful activities and growth these past few weeks!

We have read a great many versions of the Gingerbread Man (boy, girl, baby, etc.) and are enjoying the similarities and differences in the outcome of the gingerbread being.  Talk about the different characters and settings has also been part of this process. You had a gingerbread project come home this week. Have fun designing him/her and send it back in for display.

We have been learning so much about the continent of Australia and kangaroos with our Go2Science mission! If you are on Facebook you can check out the Go2Science page to keep up to date with what we have been working on.

During writing time they are finishing up the unit on pattern books. The children have been very excited to create these books as the structure of the writing matches where many of the students are reading at this time of the year. Each book spotlights at least one sight word we are working on. It all ties together very nicely.

In math we are working with teen numbers, formation of numbers, making pictures to match the number written, addition and subtraction practice, counting by 10s, exploring with weight and balance using the pan balance, and reading graphs.  Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

Monday December 20th will be our Polar Express fun day! Students can wear or bring their (school appropriate) pajamas, slippers, bathrobes, and a stuffed animal (as long as it will fit in their backpack).

We will be reading the book: The Polar Express and acting out the scenes as they unfold in the story. We will continue to follow RSU1 protocol in respects to covid but we also will be having a lot of holiday fun!

A reminder that Christmas vacation begins on Thursday December 23rd and we return on January 3rd, 2022!

I want to take just a second to thank you all for making this year amazing for me. You are all so thoughtful, kind, and wonderful. I am honored and humbled to finish out 2021 with your children and I am so looking forward to a 2022 filled with so much love and growth! Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year!!!

Dear Families,

PLEASE remember that we are very busy at school and the sharing of toys, jewelry, hair accessories, and cash should not be something we are doing at school. It is confusing and distracting. Thank you.

We have been having so much fun learning about the solar system this week! We know what makes day and night and that the sun is our closest star. How exciting!

Books Read: Out In Space, Magic School Bus Lost in the Solar System, Stars! Stars! stars!, Eight Spinning Planets, There's No Place Like Space, Sun: Our Nearest Star, What Makes Day and Night?

Reading workshop is going very well. We are engaging in daily practice of reading books at our level as well as exploring picture books that we might not be able to read yet, but that teach us about non-fiction topics of interest and stories that we can follow through pictures- even if we can't read the print.

During writing time they are; visualizing places and people to write about, adding words (letters) to their pictures, rehearsing what they want to say about what they wrote, take turns sharing their ideas and writing with partners, going back into their writing pieces and revising what they have written by changing or adding to what they wrote and continuing to build up their confidence as writers. Our learning target is: "I can write my story so my partner can read it." We also wrote a personal letter to Jan Brett and we are excited to get a letter back from her soon!

In math we are working with teen numbers, playing games with partners, formation of numbers, making pictures to match the number written, addition and subtraction practice and continuing our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

As the weather is cooling down and the snow has arrived, remember we go outside on days above 10 degrees and as long as it isn't rain or ice. Fresh air is so important and I ask you to help me by sending your child with warm clothing and to make sure they have an extra set of clothing in case of emergency.
