Dear Families,

Thank you so much for being patient with me this first week of school! My main goal has been making sure your child is happy in their transition into our kindergarten classroom. If somehow I have left you with more questions, please reach out to me and let me know. I am trying! 

It has been a very busy week. We are working on our procedures and community building. We have enjoyed going to the different specials classes and meeting many new faces and doing fun activities. 

Specials are: Monday-P.E. Tuesday-Guidance, Wednesday-Art, Thursday-Library, Friday- Music

Books Read: A variety of Pete the Cat stories, Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten, and Franklin's First Day of School. 

In math we are getting to know numbers, introducing attributes of shapes, sorting, graphing birthdays, and our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observation, and the days of the week. We have also started in a new curriculum called Reveal Math. There is an explanation paper in your child's folder this week giving you a sneak peak into what can be expected!

 Many reading and writing assessments will be taking place these first few weeks of school. We have begun our phonemic awareness and phonics programs and formal writing instruction will begin soon! We are working our way through our alphabet series and you have, no doubt, seen the headbands coming home each day as well as a coloring book to focus on that letter of the day. These all stay at home and some families have taken a shoe box to house the books in for their child to be able to practice reading them. 

We have begun to be scientists and use our observation skills to watch caterpillars grow-and grow-and grow! Most of them are still in the very hungry stage! 

We are learning about the Woolwich Way! The Woolwich Way is made up of 6 qualities that will help us to be the best we can be! (Courtesy- I can use good manners, Compassion-I can help others, Respect- I can treat others kindly, Honesty-I can tell the truth, Responsibility- I can take care of myself and my stuff, Quality- I can do my best even when things are hard)

How nice to see the sun and have some heat this past week!!!

This will be my last newsletter of the year. I can't believe it! 

We are going to be exploring force and motion next week and I am asking if they have a matchbox type toy car to bring it in. It will be a fun study! 

Thank you for such a wonderful year in kindergarten! We have reached the end of our time together and I want to tell you how honored I am to have been able to spend every day with your precious children. 

I will still see them in the hallway and on the playground. I will watch them grow from afar. I am a cheerleader forever for them!

Dear Families,

Wow-it has been a while since my last "official" newsletter! Sorry. It has been a little overwhelming as of late outside of school, but your students have continued to learn and grow and reach while in my absence. They really are amazing!

I will not be in the classroom on May 15, 16, and 19. It is time to do Kindergarten screening again already! This year is flying by...

We got to make stone soup this week after a deep dive into the stories and the similarities and differences of each book. Such a wonderful story about sharing and friendship. 

In math we are working on daily routines, using teen numbers, writing numbers to 100, exploring 3D shapes, and solving word problems in different ways. 

For writing, we are naming parts of a sentence, name action words (verbs), write sentences that rhyme, use size words to describe, and edit their work. 

We have had a tremendous time with our study is biodiversity in our mission to Borneo with our Go2Science program! We have been super busy here at school working on our hypothesis and deciding if it is true or false...it is still too early to tell!  

The world is waking up! Spring is upon us and seems that it wants to be super wet and cool. PLEASE dress your child appropriately for the weather and assure they have extra clothes if they should get wet. 

Assessments begin next week as we head into the last couple of weeks of kindergarten and begin thinking about first grade! Oh my!

It has been such a colorful Eat the Rainbow week here at school!!! We have had fun trying many different fruits and vegetables that arrive at the end of the day for us. On blue and purple day we actually got to eat blueberry ice cream!!!! Wow! Learning to eat the rainbow will help us be our best healthy selves! 

This week has been filled with our weather unit we have started in science. We are learning all about different kinds of weather we have and why we experience it. This week we began our third and final mission with Go2 Science. Beth and Curtis are taking us to Borneo to study biodiversity. The hypothesis for the mission is: Forests with large trees will have greater biodiversity than forests with smaller trees. We are going to learn so much about so much!!! The children are excited to get started! (and so am I).

We are continuing to practice reading like we are talking instead of word by word and making those sight words more automatic so we don't trip over them when reading our stories.  We took a deep dive into the many variations of the story Stone Soup and will be making our own stone soup next week! 

In writing we are naming different parts of a sentence, naming who or what the sentence is about, and naming the action word, or verb, in a sentence. There is a lot to unpack and understand. 

In math we are working with teen numbers, formation of numbers, addition and subtraction practice, graphing pets, counting and number recognition through graphing , solving number problems, and continuing our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school, patterned 10 frames, tally marks, money, and days of the week. 

Please make sure (as we approach mud season) that your child has dry clothes in case a change is needed. Also, it isn't the warm part of spring yet. It is still quite chilly and the expectation still includes boots, jackets, hats, and mittens.

Just a couple of reminders this week! 

Monday we are heading to Morse High School for a Kinderconzert about Burt Dow- Deep Water Man. Please do your best to have your child to school on time so they don't miss the bus! We will leave shortly after arrival. 

Thursday will be a 1/2 day of school and I look forward to seeing you at our conference. 

Friday will also be a 1/2 day of school.

Such a fun and busy week! 

I am looking for 2 people who would like to join our class to go to Morse High School on March 24th to a Kinderconzert. Time commitment is approximately 9 am to 10:30. Send me an email if interested. If I get too many requests I will draw names from a hat! Thanks for your consideration. 

We have been reading many Dr. Seuss books and celebrating him as a reader and illustrator. Iconic for us all! Read Across America week was full of fun celebrations ending with book character dress up day. Wow, the kids LOVE being at school all dressed up! 

The Chickadee Reading program also kicked off this week. We will have guest readers from around the school sharing the Chickadee nominated books that are up for a vote this year. We will be able to cast our own votes here at WCS and see how we stack up against the rest of the state. We sure are reading up a storm here this week! 

Assessments have eaten up a majority of our time this week. I am so excited to share the results with you~

Conference times are opening today for our parent/teacher conferences on March 27th. I can't wait to meet with you all and talk about how kindergarten is going.
