Dear Families,

We have had such a fun week with all of our silly Dr. Seuss activities. We began the week with our community reader who came in and read three classic stories to us as well as let us have a turn strumming her guitar and we ended the week going up to the 3rd floor as the 6th graders treated us to their Dr. Seuss Cafe. Please ask your child about this as it was so much fun! 

Books Read: Many, many, many Dr. Seuss books! A few were; The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, Go!Dog!Go!, ABC, Mr. Brown Can Moo-Can You? and on and on!

During writing time they are; writing personal letters to their pen pals in Pittston, writing a thank you letter to our community reader, and continuing to teach others through our how-to writing unit. 

Animated Alphabet is our approach to phonemic awareness and spelling. The letters are taught through a multi sensory approach of music, dance, characters and signs which help the students hold onto that information. The character we learned this week was; Yakety Yak.

In math we are being introduced to the different attributes of shapes, working with two digit numbers, formation of numbers, addition and subtraction practice, counting and number recognition, solving number stories and continuing our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

Dear Families,

I hope you had a wonderful vacation! I got to have my granddaughters overnight and also talk with my son who is stationed in Germany! I couldn't have asked for more. Welcome Cane to our classroom~it is so much fun making new friends!

Next week is Dr. Seuss week-please check all of the activities on the Woolwich Central School website. It will be a very exciting week!

We have been learning about dental health this week. Not only brushing, flossing and seeing the dentist, but also protecting your teeth while playing sports and eating food that makes your teeth happy. 

Books Read: Tooth Fairy, Just Going to the Dentist, Doctor DeSoto, Franklin and the Tooth Fairy, Norman Fools the Tooth Fairy, and the song, Wiggly, Jiggly Loose Tooth

During writing time they are; beginning our unit on writing "how to" books. This unit will allow us to dive into yet another genre of writing. They will be expected to write pieces that tell others how to do something. We have started off with "How to brush our teeth."We will continue to write up a storm as we learn more and more.  We received a letter and a signed poster from Jan Brett and our pen pals from Pittston sent us love bug Valentines. It is fun to write to people and have them write back! It makes our writing purposeful.

Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

PLEASE REMEMBER: It is still going to be cold and we venture outside 2-3 times a day if the temperature is above 10, so please, please, please remember to send boots, hats, mittens, snow pants and even an extra set of dry clothes and socks. I have extras here, but they like having their own things to wear. It is my job to keep them safe, so please help me do that.

We have two BIG celebrations next week! Our 100th day of school and Valentine's Day! Please see the attached papers for details and what I need help with. THANK YOU! 

Books Read: Snow Friends, Warm in Winter, I'm A Little Snowman, The Snowy Day, The Snow Child, Snowballs

During writing time they are; visualizing places and people to write about, adding words (letters~vowels!) to their pictures, rehearsing what they want to say about what they wrote, take turns sharing their ideas and writing with partners, going back into their writing pieces and revising what they have written by changing or adding to what they wrote and continuing to build up their confidence as writers. Our pen pal letters from Pittston have started! We will be writing back and forth for the remainder of the year and then in June we will be meeting them in real life and having a fun visit!

Animated Alphabet is our approach to phonemic awareness and spelling. The letters are taught through a multi sensory approach of music, dance, characters and signs which help the students hold onto that information. The characters we learned this week were; Grouchy Owl and Abe the Skating Hare.

In math we are working with two digit numbers, formation of numbers, addition and subtraction practice, describing patterns, measurement activities, counting and number recognition, solving number stories, getting ready for our 100 Day Celebration and continuing our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

Dear Families,

A friendly reminder that we go outside if the temperature is above 10 degrees (wind chill). It is very important that the children are covered from head to toe while outside getting fresh air and exercise. If you would like to send in snow pants to stay here or extra hats/mittens or comfy slippers that is great. PLEASE make sure your child's name is inside somewhere. You can't believe how many children have the exact same stuff! An extra set of clothes is also welcome for those days when the snow gets into those places and the children are wet. I want them to be comfortable and safe this winter. 

Books Read: Many versions of  The Gingerbread Man (Girl/Boy) The gingerbread projects that have come in so far are spectacular! If you have not sent yours in yet, please do!

Still following the Woolwich Way~even in snow times!


We have finished an author study of Jan Brett and jumped into many different versions of The Gingerbread Man. I have sent home some “homework” that should be a lot of fun! I attached a note explaining what I would like you to do with your giant gingerbread person. The sky is the limit!

I hope you enjoy your 3 day weekend!

Books Read: The Gingerbread Baby, Gingerbread Friends,The Gingerbread Girl and many, many versions of the traditional Gingerbread Boy/Man.

During writing time they are; visualizing places and people to write about, adding words (letters) to their pictures, rehearsing what they want to say about what they wrote, take turns sharing their ideas and writing with partners, going back into their writing pieces and revising what they have written by changing or adding to what they wrote and continuing to build up their confidence as writers. Our learning target is: "I can write my story so my partner can read it." We also wrote a personal letter to Jan Brett and we are excited to get a letter back from her soon!

Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

Dear Families,

The happiest of New Years to you! It will be a wonderful year. 

We have started an author study of Jan Brett. Her stories and illustrations are perfect for this time of the year! 

Books Read: The Mitten, The Hat, Hedgie's Surprise and also another version of The Mitten which was written by AlvinTresselt. We spent time comparing and contrasting the two versions of the story as well as predicting, sequencing, and retelling the events. 

During writing time they are; visualizing places and people to write about, adding words (letters) to their pictures, rehearsing what they want to say about what they wrote, telling a story across pages, taking turns sharing their ideas and writing with partners, going back into their writing pieces and revising what they have written by changing or adding to what they wrote and continuing to build up their confidence as writers.

Animated Alphabet is our approach to phonemic awareness and spelling. The letters are taught through a multi sensory approach of music, dance, characters and signs which help the students hold onto that information. The characters we learned this week were; Chauncy Chipmunk and Old Joe Crow.

In math we are working with teen numbers, formation of numbers, making pictures to match the number written, addition and subtraction practice, describing patterns, counting and number recognition through graphing , using a pan balance as a tool to compare the weights of objects and continuing our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

Dear Families,

Thank you all for coming to the Christmas performance this week. I believe it to be the first year in my fifteen that there has been 100% participation in the concert. Well done!

Books Read: Countdown To Christmas, Merry Christmas, Big Hungry Bear!, The Wild Christmas Reindeer, The Night Before Christmas, The Polar Express

During writing time they are; using patterns like-"I like" and "I see" to make books to share with their friends. The pattern of language and staying on one topic while exploring this kind of writing are the key concepts.

Animated Alphabet is our approach to phonemic awareness and spelling. The letters are taught through a multi sensory approach of music, dance, characters and signs which help the students hold onto that information. The characters we learned this week were; Lou Lou Moose and Woody Woodchuck.

In math we are discussing volume and capacity using the rice table and weight using the pan balance, working with teen numbers, formation of numbers, making pictures to match the number written, addition and subtraction practice and continuing our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

Monday December 21-We will be having some fun with the story, The Polar Express. The students are allowed to bring their pajamas to change into here at school.

Tuesday December 22- A VERY low-key “Party”-NO GIFTS- We also will have some healthy snacks, so if you are interested in sending in a healthy snack or juice or cups or plates, let me know at ssample@rsu1.org

December 23-January 4- Vacation-Enjoy family and friends! (My middle son will not be home from his overseas mission until summer, but will be able to spend time with my other children and my two granddaughters.)  Blessings all!
