Dear Families,

We have been learning so much about our 5 senses and how they keep us safe.

We have also been involved with the Chickadee Award Program which allows many different teachers in our school (including Mr. Libby) to read a variety of wonderful literature, for the children to respond in writing to the books and then, when all are read, they will have a chance to vote on their favorite of them all. I wonder who will win?

During writing time, we continue to write many, many how-to books. The expectation is the student tell a sequence of how to do something (make a sandwich, take care of a pet, plant a seed, build a snowman, be a good friend) and then write the steps in book form. We are still needing to stretch out words, make sure each word has a vowel in it, use classroom print and do quality work while we explore this genre. We are also writing many letters back and forth with out Pittsfield pen pals who we will meet in May/June.

Animated Alphabet is our approach to phonemic awareness and spelling. The letters are taught through a multi sensory approach of music, dance, characters and signs which help the students hold onto that information. The characters we learned this week were; Quentin Quail and Joy and her Noisy Toy.

In math we are working with two digit numbers, formation of numbers, addition and subtraction practice, counting and number recognition, solving number stories, and continuing our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations (adding “Lion and Lamb” to our weather observations), tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

We are learning about the Woolwich Way! The Woolwich Way is made up of 6 qualities that will help us to be the best we can be! (Courtesy- I can use good manners, Compassion-I can help others, Respect- I can treat others kindly, Honesty-I can tell the truth, Responsibility- I can take care of myself and my stuff, Quality- I can do my best even when things are hard

Dear Families,

We have had such a fun week with all of our silly Dr. Seuss activities. We began the week with our community reader who came in and read three classic stories to us as well as let us have a turn strumming her guitar and we ended the week going up to the 3rd floor as the 6th graders treated us to their Dr. Seuss Cafe. Please ask your child about this as it was so much fun!

Books Read: Many, many, many Dr. Seuss books! A few were; The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, Go!Dog!Go!, ABC, Mr. Brown Can Moo-Can You? and on and on!

During writing time they are; writing personal letters to their pen pals in Pittston, writing a thank you letter to our community reader, and continuing to teach others through our how-to writing unit.

Animated Alphabet is our approach to phonemic awareness and spelling. The letters are taught through a multi sensory approach of music, dance, characters and signs which help the students hold onto that information. The character we learned this week was; Yakety Yak.
