Dear Families,

Gosh we have been a sick bunch these last few weeks! Hopefully the next 2 weeks before vacation everyone will be here so we can get back to it!

We have read a great many versions of the Gingerbread Man (boy, girl, baby, etc.) and are enjoying the similarities and differences in the outcome of the gingerbread being.  Talk about the different characters and settings has also been part of this process.

We have been learning so much about the continent of Africa and groundwater with our Go2Science mission! If you are on Facebook you can check out the Go2Science page to keep up to date with what we have been working on. We started printing 3D safari vehicles on our 3d printer and watching some very interesting footage from Kenya! All the while waiting to finish testing our hypothesis about groundwater underneath HIP Academy.

During writing time they are finishing up the unit on pattern books. The children have been very excited to create these books as the structure of the writing matches where many of the students are reading at this time of the year. Each book spotlights at least one sight word we are working on. It all ties together very nicely.

Animated Alphabet is our approach to phonemic awareness and spelling. The letters are taught through a multi sensory approach of music, dance, characters and signs which help the students hold onto that information. The character we learned this week was Old Joe Crow.

In math we are working with teen numbers, formation of numbers, making pictures to match the number written, addition and subtraction practice, counting by 10s, exploring with weight and balance using the pan balance, and reading graphs.  Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

We are learning about the Woolwich Way! The Woolwich Way is made up of 6 qualities that will help us to be the best we can be! (Courtesy- I can use good manners, Compassion-I can help others, Respect- I can treat others kindly, Honesty-I can tell the truth, Responsibility- I can take care of myself and my stuff, Quality- I can do my best even when things are hard)

Upcoming Events:
February 14- Valentine's Day Party! & 100th day celebration (?) depending on weather~

Dear Families,

There has been a change in our concert!!! Our kindergarten concert is now Wednesday January 29th at 1:30 pm. There is NO evening performance!

We continue to explore Jan Brett stories and books. This week we spent a lot of time with Three Snow Bears and did a lot of talk about sequencing events and why it is important to remember the sequence of a story in order to retell it in the correct way.

We have completed our Benchmark reading assessments and I am so pleased at all the progress students are making in the area of reading! Yeah!

During writing time the children continue to work on pattern books. They have been very excited to create these books as the structure of the writing matches where many of the students are reading at this time of the year. Each book spotlights at least one sight word we are working on. It all ties together very nicely.

Animated Alphabet is our approach to phonemic awareness and spelling. The letters are taught through a multi sensory approach of music, dance, characters and signs which help the students hold onto that information. The characters we met this week were; Ichabod Ichthyosaurus and Chauncy Chipmunk. Quite a mouthful~both of them!

In math we are working with teen numbers, formation of numbers, making pictures to match the number written, addition and subtraction practice, building hexagons using other shapes, probability practice with our dice game, and continuing our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

We are learning about the Woolwich Way! The Woolwich Way is made up of 6 qualities that will help us to be the best we can be! We have been engulfed in an author study of Jan Brett. Her stories and illustrations are perfect for this time of the year! Books Read: The Mitten, The Hat, The Umbrella, and The Three Snow Bears.

We have completed our NWEA testing in both reading and math and I am impressed with the amazing work the students did. It was very hard work yet they completed all parts like champions! Yeah!

During writing time the children are working on pattern books. They have been very excited to create these books as the structure of the writing matches where many of the students are reading at this time of the year.
