December 16, 2022

Tuesday December 20th will be our Polar Express fun day! Students can wear or bring their (school appropriate) pajamas, slippers, bathrobes, and a stuffed animal (as long as it will fit in their backpack).

We will be joining Mrs. Plummer's class and be reading the book: The Polar Express and acting out the scenes as they unfold in the story.

A reminder that Christmas vacation begins on Thursday December 22nd and we return on January 3rd, 2023!

I want to take just a second to thank you all for making this year amazing for me. You are all so thoughtful, kind, and wonderful. I am honored and humbled to finish out 2022 with your children and I am so looking forward to a 2023 filled with so much love and growth! Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year!!!

Sarah~

Dear Families,

We have been having so much fun learning about the solar system this week! We traveled with a rover to Mars and had an astronaut on the space station read a book to us! (Her hair was floating all around her!)

Books Read: Good Night Moon, The Man in the Moon, Rock-a-bye Moon, and individual planet fact books.

Reading workshop is going very well. We are engaging in daily practice of reading books at our level as well as exploring picture books that we might not be able to read yet, but that teach us about non-fiction topics of interest and stories that we can follow through pictures- even if we can't read the print.
Writing workshop gets into full swing next week!

In math we are working with teen numbers, playing games with partners, formation of numbers, making pictures to match the number written, addition and subtraction practice and continuing our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

As the weather is cooling down and the snow has arrived, remember we go outside on days above 10 degrees and as long as it isn't rain or ice. Fresh air is so important and I ask you to help me by sending your child with warm clothing and to make sure they have an extra set of clothing in case of emergency.

We are learning about the Woolwich Way! The Woolwich Way is made up of 6 qualities that will help us to be the best we can be! (Courtesy- I can use good manners, Compassion-I can help others, Respect- I can treat others kindly, Honesty-I can tell the truth, Responsibility- I can take care of myself and my stuff, Quality- I can do my best even when things are hard)

Dear Families,

Rabbit! Rabbit! Ask your child what it means if you are unsure!

PLEASE remember that we are very busy at school and the sharing of toys, jewelry, hair accessories, and cash should not be something we are doing at school. It is confusing and distracting. Thank you.

We have been having so much fun learning about the solar system this week! We know what makes day and night and that the sun is our closest star. How exciting!

Books Read: Out In Space, Magic School Bus Lost in the Solar System, Stars! Stars! stars!, Eight Spinning Planets, There's No Place Like Space, Sun: Our Nearest Star, What Makes Day and Night?

Reading workshop is going very well. Anyway...tomorrow is our last day of school for the week~it is also our last day to collect pocket change for HIP Academy in Kenya. If you find any loose change kicking around that needs a home, please send it in tomorrow~

My son, Patrick

Thank you Veterans!

A turkey project has come home with your child this week- wrapped as a scroll. Have fun creating together and please send it back in when finished~

A bit of help that I need... please assist your child by making sure there are no toys or other distractions in their backpacks or pockets. We have had many instances of students "giving, trading, sharing, lending" items and we honestly don't have the time for those distractions in our day. I really need your help with this and I thank you in advance.

We are at letter Vv with our Alphabet Bootcamp! Only a couple of more days until we have visited every letter in the alphabet. Then the REAL fun begins!!! Reading and Writing workshop arrive.

In math we are working with subitizing,  sorting, ten frames, teen numbers, recognizing teen numbers through movement, formation of numbers, addition and subtraction practice and continuing our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

Hello Families!
Our caterpillars----chrysalis----butterfly cycle has finished up! We have released 15 monarch butterflies into the world so they can start that long migration to Mexico! We ended up with 5 females and 10 males. Bye Bye, Butterflies! Safe travels~

We are steadily working our way through our Alphabet Bootcamp. 26 letters in 26 days. You have noticed their headbands coming home and the little readers that go along with the letters practiced. Often time we run out of time to add color and details to these readers. Feel free to have your student color and read these books to you. Maybe keep them all in one place and read them at night along with your nightly read aloud. Students will gain great independence when practicing books they are able to read.

In math we are getting to know numbers 0-10, sorting, discussing a graph, using math manipulatives, 10 frames, positional words, finger counting, working with shapes and continuing our calendar routines.

We are finishing our study of the life cycle of the butterfly. Some caterpillars are in chrysalis mode and working on that fabulous metamorphosis and some are already on their way to Mexico! We have released 12 so far~~~

We had a FABULOUS trip to Rocky Ridge Orchard and had a delicious apple and doughnut. We picked up a small pumpkin and painted it in art class~(it hopefully made it home)! The hay ride was so much fun. We also brought home a bag of apples and will make a warm applesauce next week.

Books Read: Pete the Cat Falling for Autumn, There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.  The Big Apple, and the song-A-P-P-L-E
 (which is sung like "Bingo)

In math we are getting to know numbers 0-10, sorting, discussing a graph, using math manipulatives, 10 frames,  finger counting, working with shapes and continuing our calendar routines.

We began a letter of the day series and we have completed A, B, C, D, E, F! You might see headbands coming home with a picture that represents that letter and sound we are working on for the day. This is a very quick review of 26 letters in 26 days and is a whole lot of fun!

In science we continue to learn about the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly. We currently have 4 caterpillars still munching. Hopefully they will think about becoming a chrysalis soon so we can release them for their flight to Mexico before the cold weather sets in! We have 12 in chrysalis already. We have learned so much about the caterpillar life cycle!

We are starting our Go2Science mission about Groundwater. We are in search of evidence for our hypothesis: Will we find warter underneath HIP Academy in Kenya, Africa. If you don't know about Go2Science yet, you are soon going to know a lot about it!!! Fun!

Books: Cont. re-reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar (and doing some very fun activities), and reading some fun ABC books. Pete the Cat has also been a favorite of ours this week! We also have started using our book boxes and developing good reading skills.

In math we are getting to know numbers 0-10, sorting, discussing a graph, using math manipulatives, using 5 frames, practicing with quick looks at collections of dots, finger counting, working with shapes and continuing our calendar routines.

 Dear Families,

***Please make sure all paperwork that came home this week is returned as soon as possible. ***

It has been a very busy week. We are continuing our procedures and community building. We have enjoyed going to the different specials classes and meeting many new faces and doing fun activities.

Specials are: Monday-Library, Tuesday-Art, Wednesday-Guidance, Thursday-Music, Friday- P.E.

Thank you for all of your emails and continual patience with me this week. It is a lot to keep these little ones safe and happy and if somehow I have left you with more questions, please reach out to me and let me know. I am trying!

Books Read: A variety of Pete the Cat stories, Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten, and Franklin's First Day of School.

In math we are getting to know numbers, introducing attributes of shapes, sorting, graphing birthdays, and our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observation, and the days  of the week.

Many reading and writing assessments have taken place these first few days of school. We will begin a more structured approach to reading and writing beginning soon.

We have begun to be scientists and use our observation skills to watch caterpillars grow-and grow-and grow! Most of them are still in the very hungry stage!

We are learning about the Woolwich Way! The Woolwich Way is made up of 6 qualities that will help us to be the best we can be! Lots of upcoming exciting events are coming at us for the last few weeks of school. We will be having an author visit, a school-wide field day, and an open house for the entire school. WELCOME APRIL!

This week has been filled with our weather unit we have started in science. We are learning all about different kinds of weather we have and why we experience it. Lot's of multi-syllable vocabulary words are involved! This week we began our third and final mission with Go-2 Science. Beth and Curtis are taking us to Baja California Sur, Mexico to study cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises). We are going to learn so much about so much!!! The children are excited to get started! (and so am I). I am also working to have Beth and Curtis visit us in real life at our school!!! I'll keep you posted. It's kind of a big deal~

We are continuing to practice reading like we are talking instead of word by word and making those sight words more automatic so we don't trip over them when reading our stories.  We also have read many spring books as well as weather books. We are becoming amazing readers!

In writing we are editing a final narrative writing piece and next week we will begin our How-To writing unit. This year is moving too fast for me~

In math we are working with teen numbers, formation of numbers, addition and subtraction practice, graphing pets, counting and number recognition through graphing , solving number problems, and continuing our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school, patterned 10 frames, tally marks, money, and days of the week.

I am sending home any extra clothes you might have sent in for your child to wear. I want to clean out all the winter grip from their cubbies and they might not still fit. These people are growing so very much!

Upcoming Events:

April 18- 22- April Vacation
May 19 & 20 No School for Kindergarten ONLY
May 30- No School- Memorial Day

March

Our Farm Stand Lettuce Grow-planted!

We were very excited to have the Farm Stand-Lettuce Grow delivered to Woolwich Central School and even more excited that it can live in our space! We are going to be learning a lot about growing plants traditionally as well as hydroponically!!! I hope your students are as excited as I am~

If you have not signed up for conferences yet, please do!

https://woolwich.rsu1.org/o/woolwich-central-school/article/679807

Please make sure your child has an extra set of dry clothes to keep here. The snow/melting/freezing/wetness makes it very likely we will get our clothes wet and no one enjoys sitting in wet clothes. Also, a pair of extra shoes so we aren't stomping around in uncomfortable footwear. Spring is a tricky season!!!

A change here in the RSU is that our kindergarten screening for next year's class will take place as it has pre-covid. That impacts our current class schedule. A big heads up that KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS ONLY will not have school in May 19 & May 20. It is exciting to be getting back to (dare I say normal) but it is also an inconvenience for all of you...

Upcoming Events:

March 18- No School- Professional Development Day

March 24- Parent/Teacher Conferences~Both 24th and 25th are 1/2 days of school!

March 4, 2022

Hello All!

It has been such a fun and topsy-turvy week here! Between the weather and all of the festivities, we have been busy and engaged in some great learning!

A couple of housekeeping things...

If any of you had a gift of lavender hand sanitizer spray sent to our classroom...THANK YOU!!!

Speaking of "tricky" the RSU has said that as of Wednesday March 9th that we are able to remove our masks and go without. Having said that, I realize there may be some of you that want your child to continue to mask while at school. It will be helpful if you send me an email telling me that as a way to try and keep track of who is doing what. Thank you~~

Another change here in the RSU is that our kindergarten screening for next year's class will take place as it has pre-covid.

February 18, 2022

Hello!

Well, this has been an incredibly busy week! I am ever so thankful to be back in the classroom and feeling like a "normal/healthy" individual! I hope you are all feeling well and are able to enjoy this coming week doing those things you love the most~
I will have my grandchildren for a few days. They are 5, 7, and 14. Busy, busy, busy...

So, this week started with a special assembly/musical in the cafeteria. The 6th graders entertained us and we were so excited to get back toward what feels like school used to.

Monday was also Valentine's Day and we showered each other with friendship and love.

Thursday was our 100th day of school and we celebrated all day with dozens of activities surrounding the number 100. We even had a 100 snack using a pretzel rod and mini bagels. We tried to stack 100 red solo cups and completed 100 exercises. We enjoyed books about children celebrating their 100th day of school and practiced number writing to 100. We also wrote about what food item we could eat 100 of. There was quite a selection of foods chosen-along with some pretty hefty appetites!

We worked with Mrs. Plummer's class to get all 100+ cans/food items up to the office to be sent off to the food bank. Thank you for all of your donations. It was much appreciated!

I hope you all have a wonderful week! March is just around that corner!

We have been learning so much about the continent of Australia and kangaroos with our Go2Science mission! This coming week will be the final week to test our hypothesis.  If you are on Facebook you can check out the Go2Science page to keep up to date with what we have been working on.

During writing time they are spending their time editing previous work. They are learning to add details and label pictures to make their writing more interesting to the reader.

In math we are working with teen numbers, formation of numbers, making pictures to match the number written, addition and subtraction practice, counting by 5s and 10s, working with probability through dice games, reading and creating graphs.  Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

Upcoming Events:
Kindergarten is going to attempt to collect 100 non-perishable food items before February vacation. We haven't been able to do this the past few years because of-well you know- so we are incredibly excited to be able to do this community service project again. If you are able, please consider donating food for this drive. Thank you~

Dear Families,

I want to start this by apologizing for not getting a newsletter out lately. I lost one of my best friends and my mom is also dealing with some health issues and I am her caretaker, so my life has been a little scattered. BUT we are keeping it real here at school and have some wonderful activities and growth these past few weeks!

We have read a great many versions of the Gingerbread Man (boy, girl, baby, etc.) and are enjoying the similarities and differences in the outcome of the gingerbread being.  Talk about the different characters and settings has also been part of this process. You had a gingerbread project come home this week. Have fun designing him/her and send it back in for display.

We have been learning so much about the continent of Australia and kangaroos with our Go2Science mission! If you are on Facebook you can check out the Go2Science page to keep up to date with what we have been working on.

During writing time they are finishing up the unit on pattern books. The children have been very excited to create these books as the structure of the writing matches where many of the students are reading at this time of the year. Each book spotlights at least one sight word we are working on. It all ties together very nicely.

In math we are working with teen numbers, formation of numbers, making pictures to match the number written, addition and subtraction practice, counting by 10s, exploring with weight and balance using the pan balance, and reading graphs.  Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.
