Dear Families,

Books Read: Old MacDonald Had a Farm, Is Your Mama a Llama?, Click Clack Moo, Jack and The Beanstalk (many different versions).

We have been wearing our scientist hats this week as we discover unknown (to us) information about egg layers, farm life and plants. 

During writing time they are; writing to Pittston pen pals, writing to Nurse Sherwood in honor of Nurse Day and writing to Wolfe's Neck Farm to thank them for a wonderful field trip. We are visualizing places and people to write about, adding words (letters) to their pictures, rehearsing what they want to say about what they wrote, taking turns sharing their ideas and writing with partners, adding spaces between words and punctuation at the end of a sentence, going back into their writing pieces and revising what they have written by changing or adding to what they wrote and continuing to build up their confidence as writers.

Animated Alphabet is our approach to phonemic awareness and spelling. The letters are taught through a multi sensory approach of music, dance, characters and signs which help the students hold onto that information. We have been writing words and sentences using our characters.

In math we are getting familiar with our 1-110 number grid and playing fun “I Spy” games trying to find out the number, playing with standard and nonstandard measurement, working with two digit numbers, formation of numbers, addition and subtraction practice, counting and number recognition, solving number stories, and continuing our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.

Happy May Day! I am looking forward to warmer weather and digging in my garden this weekend. I hope you have time to enjoy some outside adventures!

We learned a BIG word this week! Oviparous. Animals that lay eggs and hatch from eggs.

WebQuest! A Healthy Me!!

Here is a project I have been working on for the students. There are portions for them to work on at school, but also some links to videos and channels they may be singing to or talking about at home. Have fun exploring!

EAT THE RAINBOW week has been so exciting in Kindergarten! We have been brave and tried almost all the foods we were given to try. Each day was a new color scheme and a new tasting experience. What was your child's favorite part of eat the rainbow week???

Books Read: Clifford's Spring Clean Up, Clifford's Pals, Clifford and the Big Storm, Clifford's Good Deeds, A Rainbow of My Own, 

Science: How eating a variety of colorful foods helps keep us healthy. Try to eat a rainbow everyday! (And we don't mean Skittles).

During writing time they are writing how-to books. Teaching our friends about things we know how to do and showing how to do that in steps. Adding labels, lists, titles, bold print, and numbers help others follow your directions. It has been fun planning out and then writing steps. Not easy, but they are all getting really good at the process.

Also assessment for report cards.

Science: Our 5 Senses and how they keep us safe. We have had a fun-filled week discovering the world around us by using our senses. Also had a wonderful cold and sweet treat to finish off our study.  

During writing time they are writing how-to books. Teaching our friends about things we know how to do and showing how to do that in steps. HAPPY SPRING, EVERYONE!

Books Read: Jamie O'Rourke and the Big Potato, Clever Tom and the Leprechaun, Over in the Meadow, Counting is for the Birds, Deep in the Swamp, Butterfly Alphabet

We have been involved with the Chickadee Award Program which allows many different teachers in our school (including Mr. Libby) to read a variety of wonderful literature, for the children to respond in writing to the books and then, when all are read, they will have a chance to vote on their favorite of them all. (There are 10 in all). Ask them about their favorite Chickadee book so far!

During writing time they are; writing personal letters to their pen pals in Pittston, visualizing places and people to write about, adding words (letters) to their pictures, rehearsing what they want to say about what they wrote, taking turns sharing their ideas and writing with partners, adding spaces between words and punctuation at the end of a sentence, going back into their writing pieces and revising what they have written by changing or adding to what they wrote and continuing to build up their confidence as writers.

What a fun-filled Seuss week this has been! From Community Readers, to World Read Aloud Day, to crazy socks, hair, hats, to Twin Day. Fun-fun-fun!

I have had a request to wait until Monday to send out the book order, so there is still time to send it in on Monday. Remember-NO SCHOOL FRIDAY the 13th!

Wow! This first full week of March is starting to get drippy! Let's hope that the time change on Sunday will bring with it some continual warmth!

We have had such a fun week with all of our silly Dr. Seuss activities. We began the week with our community reader who came in and read to us. We will go up to the third floor to 6th grade next week to be treated to their Dr. Seuss Cafe. Can't wait!

Books Read: Many, many, many Dr. Seuss books! A few were; The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, Go!Dog!Go!, ABC, Mr. Brown Can Moo-Can You? And on and on!

We began our new "How-To" unit in our Lucy Calkins writing program. Trying to teach our friends the steps of how to do something can be quite tricky!

In math we are being introduced to the calculator, working with two digit numbers, formation of numbers, addition and subtraction practice, counting and number recognition, solving number stories, and continuing our calendar routines. Our routines at calendar time include; counting to the calendar number of the day, weather observations, tracking the number of days we have been in school and days of the week.
